Yesterday, Genshin Impact officially released a major PV titled “Teyvat Chapter”. In the video, we were shown the four incarnations — or shadows — of Celestia’s Sovereigns, each with clearly defined appearances.
From left to right in the image:
Sovereign of Life – Nabeloth / Gold – Rhinedottir,
Sovereign of Death – Rionahva,
Sovereign of Time – Istaroth.
Let’s take a closer look at each of them:
1. Sovereign of Life – Nabeloth
This character is actually a fusion of Nabeloth and Rhinedottir, as Rhinedottir had devoured Nabeloth, though Nabeloth’s consciousness still exists.
She takes the form of a mature woman with blonde hair and heterochromatic eyes, dressed in a hooded cloak, exuding a strong exotic aura.
2. Sovereign of Death – Rionahva
We’ve already encountered Rionahva during the Natlan storyline, though she did not appear in humanoid form at the time.
Maveka borrowed Rionahva’s power to defeat the Abyss, and Rionahva placed a curse of undeath upon the Captain, putting him into an eternal slumber.
Who would've expected Rionahva to turn out to be such a cute girl? The contrast was surprising and left a strong impression.
3. Sovereign of Void – Asmoday
Asmoday is the Sovereign of Void, the one who separated the twins at the beginning of the game.
The video reveals that she has been missing for a long time and no longer attends meetings of the Four Shadows. The remaining three suspect she may have betrayed them.
A particular line — “She loves that new master more than herself” — brings Paimon to mind. This aligns perfectly with Paimon’s deep bond with the Traveler.
There have been several past hints about this: for example, Melusine once said Paimon has a string connecting her to the sky (as Melusines can see things invisible to humans), and Paimon’s design matches the features of the Four Shadows — such as her hair clip resembling the Void Sovereign’s spatial diamond, and the Celtic triquetra on her chest symbolizing Life and Death Sovereigns. She also wears a crown.
All of this strongly implies a connection between Paimon and Celestia. To go a step further, Paimon may in fact be Celestia in slumber, or a vessel or memory fragment of the divine.
4. Sovereign of Time – Istaroth
Istaroth appears with white hair, braided on the side, and carries a melancholic aura. In the main 5.6 storyline, there is a line stating “This must be Istaroth’s influence”, confirming her intervention.
A particularly notable detail is that Istaroth is voiced by the same voice actor as Venti across all four dubbing languages. If it were just the Chinese voice, it might be a coincidence, but the consistency across languages suggests a deeper connection between Istaroth and Venti.
This is further supported by the world quest “Time and Wind”, which also hints at ties to Istaroth.
In addition to the Four Shadows, the PV also briefly shows the back of a mysterious girl and some information about the Jester.
The girl is expected to debut in the 6.0 Nordkalé region, while the Jester is clearly positioned as a firm opponent of Celestia.
Will These Four Sovereigns Become Playable?
Based on past patterns, characters who appear in major PVs tend to have a high chance of eventually becoming playable. Given how beautifully designed these four are, it would be a pity if they didn’t.
However, if they do become playable, it’s likely to happen only after the Teyvat Chapter concludes — when the game’s power levels have escalated to a sufficient degree.
